Subscription Boxes – Are they worth it?
Every year around 200,000 people in Australia search up subscription box sites, and that number is rapidly growing.
That was something which was news to me, I had no idea it was such a huge market! With a few clicks on google I was surprised to discover the mass variety of subscription boxes available.
For those wine lovers always searching for the newest flavours there’s this little nugget. Or for those coffee connoisseurs there’s this one for you. If you’re into games, comics and everything in between maybe this one is for you. Maybe you have a love for Japanese and Koran Kawaii items? Yes, there is even a box for you.
Whether your passion be books, crochet or healthy eating I can assure you there are boxes out there for you! I know that here in Australia the market for subscription boxes is only starting to take off. So here’s a place that has a list of all international subscription boxes that ship to Australia. For those who don’t like going underwear shopping, yes there is even a box for you! You can check them out here.
Another great thing about some of the subscription sites, is the occasional option of a one time “gift” purchase. Which can be incredibly useful. If you are stuck for gift ideas, it can be a lifesaver to gift a box without signing up!
When it comes to doing the stereotypical female thing, let me be the first to put my hands up and say I’m absolutely terrible at it!
I know, it’s a bit of a catch twenty two given I am a female, but that doesn’t mean I have to be good at being one.
Since becoming a mother I’ve had even less time to feel like a human, let alone a female. I would love to be one of those females who has perfect make up and skin all year round. I’d love even more to be a mom who has the perfect outfit and make up when she leaves the house!
Unfortunately the reality is, I’m a single Mum who sometimes doesn’t remember to brush her hair before tying it up. And if I was bothered….my toddler wouldn’t allow me the 30 minutes it might take me to do any form of makeup. I’m sure I’m not the only one whose left her house in shorts only to realise halfway through the day that I should have shaved my legs. (In my defence I have super fine almost invisible hair, but still!).
So, about a year ago all that frustration of not feeling like a human and like a complete failure as a female led to googling subscription boxes. I had no idea what I was looking for when I started looking. Only that I wanted a beauty box or something like that. Prior to this, I had next to no knowledge about these magical boxes people suddenly seemed to be getting. During my research I ended up discovering a number of other boxes, which completely blew my mind.
Now, when it comes to online purchasing I’m a bit hesitant as I like to know that what I’m signing up for is worth it, especially given I can’t see it. From memory I spent at least 2-3 months considering joining a company before I actually did. I stalked their website and other social media sites, went away to think about it, worked out how much I was getting vs the cost, went away to think about it. Did some more stalking, and let that cycle continue. I even went to meet some representatives at a stall one day and got offered a free box that I got to select myself then and there. Still I didn’t join up. So trust me when I say, hesitation is completely normal!
It’s so great having a little present to yourself, arriving at your door filled with goodies for you. Then learning how to use them! I’ve received some products that I’ve never heard of before! It’s been great. I actually have a skincare routine! And not only that, I’ve discovered different haircare products, beauty brands and generally items that I would never find myself. You’ll likely see a number of them pop up in feature posts as I review some favourites and new comers to the collection.
I found that prior to this, I was having a case of cold feet with purchasing. I wanted to try them, whether it be some skincare product or beauty product, but I would never commit. Mainly because I didn’t want to buy something that I didn’t like, knew nothing about or if it was any good. Also, I could never justify the more expensive products that you’d see in magazines and beauty reviews even if they got great recommendations.
A beauty box is my happy medium.
Every box is a curated collection of products, that someone else has tested and approved. Yes you always run the risk that you won’t like one or two of the items, but on a large scale it can be hard to please everyone. The best part? You receive several items for the price of one and its delivered right to your door step.
There are plenty of beauty boxes out there, even more subscription boxes, so shop around! Find one that suits your needs and lifestyle. Whether you’re after gluten free products, vegan, gaming, reading, arts, clothes, there is definitely a subscription box out there for you!
Have you tried any subscription boxes before? Let me know what one and how you went! If not, have I convinced you to check some out?
